Communicating in team ministry (Phil 2:19-22)

Below are some links to external articles related to our seminars

Communication problems can arise between you and minister because:

  • You represent one constituency, your minister represents many
  • Busyness
  • Jealousy
  • Differing goals in ministry

What should you expect of your minister?

  • Regular one-to-one meetings
  • Will be your pastor
  • Will give lead in prayer support for you in the congregation

Unrealistic expectations of your minister:

  • Minister can meet you at the drop of a hat
  • Will always take your side in a dispute
  • Will be your best friend

COMMUNICATING WITH THE ELDERS (1 Pete 5:1-5)

  • Understand the source of their authority
  • Avoid undermining their authority in front of young people
  • Secure a regular slot to update the Kirk Session
  • Ask individual elders for advice – give them ‘ownership’

COMMUNICATING WITH THE CONGREGATION (Eph 4:1-5)

  • Remember you have a ministry beyond your young people
  • Be well prepared for any input into worship services
  • Look for opportunities to share your passion for youth ministry with other groups e.g. volunteer to talk to PWA, Senior Citizen’s Fellowship
  • Don’t intentionally set out to shock/upset the congregation

COMMUNICATING WITH YOUTH WORK VOLUNTEERS (Phil 1:3-6)

  • Keep meetings to a minimum
  • Spend time with individual volunteers
  • Respect long-established youth work – even where change is needed
  • Tackle problem people head-on

WHAT’S THE SECRET TO GOOD COMMUNICATION? (Phil 2:1-11)

All of our relationships should be characterised by grace and a Christlike attitude. That can mean treating others in the right way even when they are not gracious towards you!
